Heart-type FABP (H-FABP) is the heart member of the fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) with nine distinct types and it is found abundantly in the heart muscles. H-FABP is released very rapidly following Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)-- as soon as 30 minutes after the onset of an ischemic episode. It is therefore regarded as a highly sensitive early rise biomarker for AMI.
Similar to myoglobin, it has a rapid release and clearance profile after an ischemic episode, peaking at 6-8 hours and reverting to normal within 24-30 hours. However, being a heart abundantly protein, H-FABP is more specific and sensitive than myoglobin. H-FABP tests offer time-advantages for rescuing patients.
